Family holiday in Agadir: the phone data plan that avoids bill shock
The real risk on a family holiday is not your own phone. It is four devices, all quietly updating, streaming and syncing on a roaming connection. Here is how to set up the family's data once, before you fly.
Where bill shock really comes from

None of it feels like heavy use in the moment, which is exactly why it adds up.

The five-minute lockdown (do it at home)
- Turn data roaming off on every UK line, including the children's devices.
- Set app updates, iCloud or Google Photos backups and podcast downloads to Wi‑Fi only.
- Switch off cellular data for streaming and gaming apps on kids' devices, using Screen Time or Family Link.
- Download films, shows, games and audiobooks before you fly.
- If your phone allows it, set a data warning on the eSIM line.

When unlimited makes sense
If you would rather not think about data at all and expect to hotspot for streaming, an unlimited plan removes the counting. Read the fair-use terms first, as some unlimited plans slow speeds after heavy use.
Half-term, Easter and summer
