Landing at Agadir Airport: a UK traveller's first-hour guide

Agadir Al Massira is a small, single-terminal airport, and for most UK arrivals it is refreshingly simple. Here is what the first hour looks like, and the handful of things worth sorting before you fly.

Flying in from the UK

Agadir is genuinely well served from Britain: easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair, TUI and British Airways between them cover most of the country, from the London airports up through the Midlands to Scotland. Budget around four hours in the air.

A lot of these services are scheduled to land in the evening rather than the middle of the afternoon, so it is worth planning your first hour on the ground for a dark, slightly sleepy airport rather than a bright, easy one.

From the aircraft to the arrivals hall

There is only one route through Al Massira, which is one of the nicer things about it: follow the signs to passport control, and baggage reclaim is directly beyond that, with the SIM counters, cash machines and currency desks all in the same open area. The only variable is the queue, which can stretch out on an evening when two or three UK flights have landed close together.

Have your passport to hand, plus the name and address of your accommodation in case you are asked. Screenshot it before you fly so you do not depend on a signal to find it.

Cash, cash machines and currency desks

Grand taxis at the airport generally want cash in dirhams, and smaller cafés, surf camps and riads often prefer it too. There are cash machines and exchange desks in arrivals. Desk rates can be a little worse than exchange offices in Agadir, so change or withdraw just enough for the transfer and top up in town.

Getting your phone online

You have three realistic options:

If you are landing late, the eSIM is the only option that does not depend on a counter being open.

Getting to your hotel

Grand taxis wait outside the terminal and use fixed fares by destination, with the fare board displayed at the rank. Recent traveller reports suggest roughly 150 to 250 MAD (about £12 to £20) to central Agadir and roughly 250 to 350 MAD (about £20 to £27) to Taghazout, with higher prices late at night. Agree the fare before your bags go in the boot. If you would rather not negotiate at midnight, pre-book a transfer at a fixed price before you fly.

Five mistakes UK travellers make at AGA

1. Assuming you can just order a ride-hailing app. The likes of Uber and Bolt are not something to count on here. Head for the taxi rank, or arrange a driver before you fly.
2. Leaving UK data roaming on. Your phone will happily connect to a Moroccan network and start charging.
3. Landing with no cash. The taxi rank generally won't take cards.
4. Relying on a kiosk to get online at midnight. Opening hours vary.
5. Not saving the address offline. A dead signal and an unfamiliar driveway are a poor combination.
