Morocco eSIM not working? Nine fixes to try before you panic
You have landed, your eSIM is installed, and nothing loads. Almost every case is a setting. Work through these nine checks in order and you will usually be online in five minutes.
The short answer
Most "my eSIM does not work" cases come down to a handful of settings: the eSIM line is off, mobile data is pointing at your UK SIM, data roaming is off on the eSIM line, or the phone has not connected to a Moroccan network yet. Work through the fixes below in order. They take about five minutes.
Find your symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Try fix |
|---|---|---|
| No signal bars | eSIM line off, or not connected yet | 1, 4, 5 |
| Signal bars but no internet | Roaming off, wrong data line, or APN | 2, 3, 7 |
| Works, then stops | Plan used up or expired | 8 |
| Data keeps switching to your UK SIM | Data switching enabled | 2 |
| Cannot install at all | Phone not compatible or locked | Check compatibility |
Nine fixes, in order
Menu names differ between phones and software versions, so use these as a guide.
1. Make sure the eSIM line is switched on
iPhone: Settings, Mobile Service, tap your eSIM line, and turn on "Turn On This Line". Samsung: Settings, Connections, SIM manager, and switch the eSIM on. Pixel: Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, choose the eSIM and turn on "Use SIM".
2. Point mobile data at the eSIM
Set the eSIM as the line for mobile data, and on iPhone turn off "Allow Mobile Data Switching" so your phone does not slip back to the UK SIM. The aim: UK line for calls and texts, eSIM for data.
3. Turn data roaming on, for the eSIM line only
A travel eSIM connects to Moroccan networks as a visitor, so data roaming usually has to be on for that line. Keep roaming off for your UK SIM, so it never carries data by accident.
4. Toggle flight mode, then restart
Turn flight mode on for about 30 seconds, then off. If that does not help, restart the phone. It is the oldest trick and it still works.
5. Give it a minute, and check you are in coverage
The first connection can take a moment, and some plans only start their validity when they first connect to a network. Make sure you have landed, and try again near a window or outdoors if you are inside a terminal.
6. Choose the network manually
Turn off automatic network selection and pick another available network from the list. On iPhone this is under your eSIM line, Network Selection. On Android it is under Mobile networks, Network operators. If there is more than one option, try each.
7. Check the APN
Many phones set this up by themselves. If yours did not, open your eSIM's installation details in the Airalo app and enter the APN shown there on Android (Mobile networks, Access Point Names). Spelling and capital letters matter.
8. Check the plan itself
Open the Airalo app and look at the remaining data and the validity period. A plan that has run out, or passed its end date, will show signal but carry no data. If you are low, you can usually top up in the app.
9. Turn off anything that restricts data
Switch off Low Data Mode (iPhone) or Data Saver (Android), and turn off any VPN while you test. Then try a simple web page rather than an app.
What not to do
- Do not delete the eSIM to "reset" it. A travel eSIM can often be installed only once, so deleting it can mean losing the plan. Contact support first.
- Do not buy a second eSIM straight away. Check the settings above and the plan's status first.
- Do not keep UK roaming switched on as a back-up. That is how roaming bills happen. See what UK networks charge in Morocco.
Still stuck? Contact support
Open the Airalo app and use its help or support option. Have these ready: a screenshot of your eSIM details, your phone model, what you see (bars, no internet, an error), and what you have already tried. If you have not installed yet, our install guide walks through it, and the WhatsApp calls guide covers calling.
Quick checklist (screenshot this)
- eSIM line is ON
- Mobile data is set to the eSIM
- Data roaming is ON for the eSIM line, OFF for the UK line
- Flight mode toggled, phone restarted
- Tried another network manually
- Plan not used up or expired (Airalo app)
- Low Data Mode, Data Saver and VPN are off
Frequently asked questions
Why does my eSIM show signal but no internet?
The usual causes are data roaming being off for the eSIM line, mobile data pointing at your UK SIM, or an APN that needs entering on Android. Work through fixes 2, 3 and 7.
Do I need data roaming on for a travel eSIM?
Usually yes, for the eSIM line only. A travel eSIM connects as a visitor, so roaming typically needs to be on for that line. Keep it off for your UK SIM.
Can I delete and reinstall my eSIM?
Do not delete it as a first step. A travel eSIM can often be installed only once, so deleting it may mean losing the plan. Contact support instead.
How long does the eSIM take to connect after landing?
Usually a minute or two. If nothing connects after a few minutes, toggle flight mode and try selecting the network manually.
What if my phone will not install the eSIM at all?
Check that it supports eSIM and is network-unlocked. Our compatibility guide shows a 60-second test.
