Marrakech airport (RAK): getting online and getting to the medina

Marrakech Menara is small and close to the city, which makes the first hour simple if you plan two things: how you will get online, and how you will reach your riad. Here is how both work.

The short answer

Marrakech Menara (RAK) is a compact airport about 6 km from the medina. The easiest way to be online on arrival is a Morocco eSIM installed at home. SIM kiosks in the arrivals area are the fallback, taxis are a short ride, and the one thing worth settling before you land is the fare and which medina gate you are heading for.

Your first hour at Menara

  1. Before you fly

    Install your eSIM

Do it on Wi‑Fi at home. Here is the step-by-step guide. Save your riad's address and a contact number offline, and message your host your arrival time.

  2. Wheels down

    Switch flight mode off

Your phone looks for a Moroccan network. Give it a minute or two.

  3. Passport control

    Use the queue well

Guides report anything from about ten to thirty minutes, and longer when several flights land together. Confirm your pick-up or message your host while you wait.

  4. Baggage and arrivals hall

    Cash and kiosks

The arrivals hall has currency exchange, cash machines and SIM kiosks, and the exits to the taxi rank, bus stops and meeting points for drivers. Change only what you need for the ride, and carry some dirhams.

  5. Outside

    Taxi, bus or transfer

Decide before you leave the building. The options are below.

Getting online at RAK

SIM kioskKiosks in arrivals sell tourist SIMs. Guides name Maroc Telecom and Orange, and some also mention inwi.Take your passport: SIM registration needs ID. Guides report anything from a few tens of dirhams for a basic starter to around 100 to 200 MAD for larger bundles.

Getting to the medina

RAK is about 6 km southwest of the Jemaa el-Fna area, roughly 15 to 30 minutes by road depending on traffic. Recent guides and transfer companies quote very different prices, which is itself a warning to agree the fare first.

OptionTypical cost (reports)TimeNotes
Petit taxi (beige) from the rankRoughly 70 to 150 MAD (about £6 to £12) to the medina by day; more at night15 to 30 minOften negotiated rather than metered. Up to three passengers. Drivers inside the terminal may quote far more.
Airport bus, line 19Around 20 to 30 MAD25 to 45 minRuns to the Jemaa el-Fna area. Limited luggage space. Check the current timetable and price.
Pre-booked private transferFrom around €15 a car, with some providers charging more15 to 30 minDriver meets you in arrivals. Price agreed in advance.

Fares are reports from recent traveller and transfer-company guides, not official tariffs. Sterling amounts are approximate.

Reaching your riad

Cars cannot enter many of the medina's narrow lanes, so taxis usually drop you at a nearby gate or street, and many riads send someone to meet you. Message your host your arrival time before you fly, save their number, and have offline maps and a screenshot of the address ready. Your eSIM will already be working.

Five mistakes to avoid

  1. Taking the first quote. Walk to the official rank and agree the fare before the bags go in.
  2. Relying on a card. Taxis generally want cash in dirhams.
  3. Leaving UK data roaming on. Your phone will happily connect and start charging.
  4. Arriving with no way to reach your host. Save the number offline and message ahead.
  5. Leaving the eSIM until you land. You need Wi‑Fi to install it, so do it at home.

About 6 km, which is roughly 15 to 30 minutes by road depending on traffic.

How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport?

Recent guides report roughly 70 to 150 MAD for a petit taxi to the medina by day, with higher fares at night. Prices vary a lot between sources, so agree the fare before you get in.

Is there an airport bus?
